Electric vs Diesel Forklift: How to Decide

Electric or diesel? The decision is made by where the truck works and how many hours it runs. What differs on the spec sheet, and how to cost it with your own numbers.

This is the first question most buyers face, and the honest answer is that it is decided by where the truck works and how many hours it runs – not by which technology is better.

The short version

Diesel wins outdoors, on rough or sloped ground, and where refuelling has to take seconds. Electric wins indoors, in food and retail environments, on smooth floors, and wherever the truck runs enough hours for a lower cost per hour to repay a higher purchase price.

If the truck will work inside a building at all, that usually settles it: a diesel truck needs ventilation that most warehouses do not have.

What actually differs on the spec sheet

Compare any diesel and electric model in the database and the same pattern appears:

  • Weight. Electric trucks are often heavier than a diesel truck of the same capacity, because the battery is also the counterweight. That matters for floor loading and for transport.
  • Turning radius and width. Electric counterbalance trucks in the same capacity class are frequently tighter, which is why they suit indoor aisles.
  • Gradeability. Diesel trucks usually state a higher laden gradeability. If your site has a ramp, check this row specifically.
  • Power ratings are not comparable. A diesel engine kW figure and an electric drive motor kW figure are measured differently and describe different things. Do not read one as being “more powerful” than the other.

The battery is a consumable, and it is ballast

Two things about electric trucks that spec sheets state but buyers miss:

  1. The battery has a finite life and a replacement cost. Any honest cost comparison has to spread that cost across the years it lasts – which is exactly what our calculators do.
  2. The minimum battery weight on the spec sheet is a safety figure, not a suggestion. Fitting a lighter pack reduces the truck’s rated capacity, because the pack is part of the counterweight.

Charging is a shift-planning problem, not just a cost

Refuelling a diesel truck takes minutes. Charging a lead-acid battery takes hours, and running two shifts usually means either a second battery and a changing station, or a lithium-ion pack that tolerates opportunity charging. That decision has floor space and capital consequences that never appear in a cost-per-hour figure, so decide it before you compare prices.
